And then there was Zumba...

I have never been a real big fan organized aerobics. I preferred to look silly in the safety of my own home doing the occasional work ot video there. I would (and still do) go to the gym every Sunday and do my regular workout with weights and a lot of cardio- but on Wednesday's and Saturday's...I get my zumba on! It is impossible not to smile while you are sweating your ass off. You get to pretend your dancing (it doesn't matter how well you actually dance) and shake your groove thang while working out. This is perfect, especially for South Texas where salsa and samba and all those other sexy dance that people are semi-familiar with- all those get combined with hip hop and other fast rythms and it is just fun! I wish everyone in Corpus could have free access to these classes and then maybe we wouldn't be such an obese city. I know it may sound silly or idealistic- nobody likes to go to the gym, but they love going to eat greasy Mexican food and pizza. I guess this doesn't really bother me personally except for all the bad press about how fat we are when not all of us fat with diabetes. It does bother me though when a fat person complains about their weight and sedentary lifestyle and does absolutely Nothing to change it. Oh well, I guess, it's not me (hopefully) that's going to die of a coronary at 30, it's the fat whiners!

  1. This post is hiliarious, it reminds me of my rants! I have never been to zumba, but everyone I work with talks about it all of the time so I might have to give it a try. I especially love your comment about people whining about their weight. That bothers me too, I think you can only complain if you are doing something to change it.

  3. HAHAHAHA you crack me up Shelly! My mom gave me the zumba DVD and yes, I have "danced" in the living room. Actually I think my fiance enjoyed the DVD more than I did (Not me dancing, he actually started to dance also...) Nothing funnier than a grown man in boots and wranglers trying to dance to the zumba DVD. I think I worked out my abs by laughing so hard. I think Zumba is so succesful because it is so liberating. There is something irresistible about dancing to music. Unfortunately, although I love to dance, I am absolutely horrible at it. Oh, it's ugly. But with zumba, I can dance and dance in the comfort of my own living room. It actually looks nothing like the DVD but hey, I enjoy it. Zumba is great if you like to dance, especially if you are horrible at it like me!
An another note, I too do not like to listen to people complain about weight when they do little to change it. One time I was in the UC, and I was (surprise) hungry. I had a track work out in an hour or so, so I could not eat much because it would just end up on the track...I decided to get two rolls to hold me over. I was standing in the checkout line in my workout clothes with my rolls dreaming of everything I was going to eat after practice when this rather large girl came up behind me. She had a greasy burger and tons of fries. She looked at me, then my plate with two little rolls and gave a very loud an obvious "uhhhhh" in disgust. I had to bite my tongue. I am sure she thought I was starving myself to be skinny, not eating a mini meal in between a big meal, but it was very upsetting. Everytime I tell anyone what size I am someone tells me to shut up. It is so negative. I applaud you for working so hard to be healthy Shelly. Keep it up!

  4. Wooooww, I think your are the voice talking about the things that nobody dare to say out loud. I am very happy to say that I agree with you. Ooo my GOD, I have a lot of friends who are complaining about their weights, or about their unhealthy eating habits all the time, yet They do nothing about it,and it makes me really mad. I mean if you have a problem about your body, or you concern about health, just stop talking about it, and do something, otherwise you can not change anything. Wouw, thank you so much for writing this, you are absolutely right.

  5. I used to Zumba about a year ago and loved it. I do a little salsa anyway, so it's a nice mix. You might see me there soon too.
